DLA Conference Program update

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Believe it or not, I just finished every single entry I needed when my computer hiccuped and erased half of it!!! On my way to Easter dinner with the family but here is what I was able to salvage.

Lifelong Access Libraries Lifelong Access Libraries is a new model for library services to older adults. 22% of current library users are 55+. And, the first wave of the 76 million baby boomers has already turned 60. Is your library doing all it can to engage them? Hanging a sign for “seniors” won’t work for this generation, who are healthier, more active, and more committed to community service than their elders. By providing connections to meaningful work, creative retirement, and lifelong learning, public libraries can recharge themselves, millions of individuals, and all our communities. Sabrina Waldron introduces us to this multi-year, national initiative that aims to transform libraries into centers of lifelong learning and civic engagement for active older adults. It is a project of Libraries for the Future (formerly known as Americans for Libraries Council), made possible by a generous grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies. Sabrina Waldron bio:Sabrina Waldron: Program Associate, Lifelong Access LibrariesSabrina Waldron comes to LFF with a background in education, world literature, and non-profit youth initiatives.  She has taught students from middle school to college freshman. Her most recent position was as a staff assistant for various programs, including Aging and Disadvantaged Children and Youth, at The Atlantic Philanthropies.   Ms. Waldron holds an M.A. in Comparative Literature from New York University and has completed course work for the Ph.D.  She also holds a B.A. in English from the University of Florida. Her academic work focuses on 19th and 20th Century Caribbean Literature.TechnoZoo Technology animals gather at the first ever TechnoZoo event. Wander into the Chardonnay Room throughout our conference to pet a gaming console, mp3 player and Kindle and play with a podcast, an e-audio download and Flickr. Zookeepers, Vinny Alascia and Richard James, make the experience memorable.

The next meetings are:

Wednesday, March 12, 2-4

Tuesday, April 8, 2-4

Monday, April 21

I resolved the problem, everything’s fine.

I’m afraid we are going to have to change the meeting scheduled for Monday, April 21. Earlier that day or another day. A 1-3 meeting just doesn’t give me enough time to be back in Newark to work 5-9 p.m. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Minutes from 1/8

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

I realized that we did not review and approve the minutes of the January 8 meeting.  Please look them over.  Remember that these minutes are the record of our discussions and decisions. Linked here:

Minutes from 01/08

Please post comments or corrections.

We can approve at next meeting 2/29.  But it will save time if you can read them before the meeting.

DLA Pins to sell at Registration: Update

Monday, February 18, 2008

We will have DLA pins for sale at the Registration Desk.

Paul Anderson has them now and he will turn them over to me. I’m not sure who I should turn them over to. (Or is that whom?)

Leigh Ann, you can be in charge of setting the price. I’m one of those people with no retail experience.

I have the DLA pins. 2/29 rk

Post to dla-l

Announcement (trying to post to dla-l; 2/15 )

You are all invited to attend the annual Delaware Library Association Conference. The theme will be “Planting Seeds to Learn and Grow.” It will be held on Friday, May 9.

The conference is presented by the Delaware Library Association (DLA) in partnership with the Delaware Division of Libraries (DDL) .

For all of you who are DLA members, you will be able to pre-register for the conference at the special this-year-only rate of $25 — for the whole day, continental breakfast, and luncheon.

For those of who are not DLA members, why not? We will be offering a special bundled price for the conference and membership.

We have just put up the Conference website at:
http://www2.lib.udel.edu/dla/conf/

The pre-registration form and more details will be available soon, both on the website and as a mailing. The deadline for pre-registration is Wednesday, Arpil 30.

We encourage you to pre-register, rather than waiting and registering on-site, so that we will have a good count of attendees.

For the first time ever, there will be a Pre-Conference on the day before the Conference, i.e., Thursday, May 8. It will be on Library Security. See the website for more details.

We look forward to seeing you in Dover in May.

Chair, Conference Planning Committee

Revised Registration Form

Friday, February 15, 2008

Registration (updated rk 2/18)

I’m attaching the revised registration form. It’s ready to be added to the conference website. It is currently a word doc. Rebecca, you can change it to whatever format you see as best functioning on the website as long as it can be easily printed out since we don’t yet have the functionality of registering online. Since you have troubles opening my attachments, I am also going to email this document to you. Please let me know when it is live on the website so I can send out a mass email.

Notes for Next Year

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

As you saw on the agenda for the past meeting (Feb. 12), I had a category called Notes for Next Year.

I have added “Next Year” as a category on this blog. If you have things to share and are afraid you might forget, please add posts to this category.  Or add comments.

We listed April 21 as a have everything done date.  I don’t think this is realistic.  For this year, I think we should try for a week “out”; May 1 for Pre-conference and May 2 for Conference.

For next year, we should pick a done by date.  And have Pre-registration end 2 or so days before that.
